This playful rug encapsulates the charming vibrancy and tradition of mid-century Kurdo-Persian folk art. The vermillion field is subdued by the darker barn red mottling that appears throughout in the hand-knotted wool. The central medallion is an oblong lozenge in cheerful powder and steel blue tones, flanked on each end by a pair of pendants, the first in the same blue range, and the latter smaller yet, in a rich, deep indigo. The rug is encased by a tidy border in deep marine blue, beset with cheery multicolored göz motifs in alternating vermillion, peach, asparagus green, powder blue, and citron.
The carpet hails from Bijar, a market town in western Iran known as an ethnically diverse trading hub linking greater Kurdistan to the west with central Persia. The region is rugged and sparse, and its kilims — including the present piece — reflect this in the durability of their wool. Although tending toward the rustic in its fabrication, the piece echoes in a modernist fashion the design elements of the most revered Persian carpets of old, such as the teardrop pendants of the famed Ardebil carpet.
